Wayne is expected to arrive in Canberra in mid February 2011 and will study a Masters degree in Culture, Health and Medicine at the Australian National University with focus on Latin-American health policy. While in Canberra he will be hosted by Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak.
Wayne has completed B.A. Biology in May 2008 and MPH: Global Health Focus in May 2010 at Baylor University in Waco Texas.
As an international student at Baylor University in Texas, Wayne was instilled with the drive to make the most of existing resources, building upon them to create returns on investing a focused effort. During his postgraduate term there, he was granted the Ambassadorial scholarship by the Rotary Club of Waco, District 5870 of central Texas. The state itself is known for its hospitality and the residents of central Texas embody this philosophy, continuously striving to improve condition internal and external to their community. Wayne is eternally grateful to District 5870 for allowing an international to represent the great state of Texas, and allowing an opportunity to display how non-Americans do support the nation in terms of its culture and endeavours.
Having worked with low-income communities in Brazil and interned with the Pan American health Organization in his own country (Trinidad & Tobago), Wayne believes the Caribbean and Latin-American regions have both the need and potential for drastic changes in health policy. These would facilitate access to basic health care and place an emphasis on education and prevention, as opposed to treatment after having ignored the causative factors of illness. Wayne has also observed health disparities on the islands of Dominica and Grenada. Certainly, training in the planning and deliver of critical health interventions can assist these nations in improving well being. In addition, Wayne is partial to this region having been born and lived there. Wayne has conversational skill in Spanish and Portuguese that will serve as an asset in fostering partnerships across the region.
